Baby names and such...

Not sure if anybody still pops by here, wondering if I am going to update. But here I am.

Getting ready for Christmas, which will then be followed by the arrival of our new baby boy in February.

The biggest problem we had with baby #1 was settling on a name. It literally came down to the week she was born before we settled on Madeleine.

So with this one being a boy, we're back to square one. Can I bounce a few off of you? Give me your unabashed opinions. Without divulging too much info, our last name is single syllable, kinda sucks (it's fairly harsh-sounding), and starts with a G. We are looking for something different, but not too "out there."

Some of the contenders are, in no particular order:

Parker
Truman
Jamison (or Jameson, or Jamieson)
Riley
Hunter
Lincoln

any other suggestions?

I like your choices! I think boy names are harder, because you want something different than "John" many times, yet you don't want it to sound fruity like "Percival."

Parker-Love that name
Truman-Never thought about it, but I like it!
Jamison (or Jameson, or Jamieson)-Don't mind it, but others will always have a hard time spelling it.
Riley-Like it well enough, fairly popular around here.
Hunter-Like it well enough, but really overdone around here.
Lincoln-Don't hate it, don't love it.

Not to get all LOST on you, but I really like Sawyer & Ethan.

I agree boy names are harder. I tend to like "traditional" names like John, Matthew etc. a little better.

But here goes!

Parker: neutral
Jamison: I like it. Like it a lot. Although you know that is an Irish whiskey right?:)
Riley: I like this a lot too. IT is becoming very popular.
Hunter:I don't care for this. Sounds like a model or soap opera name. I put this in the "trendy" group.
Lincoln: Ok but I wonder how that would work on a baby?

What is your heritage? I like those type of names. We are Scottish/Irish so we looked at a lot of those type of names.

Kim: I'm afraid those Lost names are going to gain too much popularity. What about Hurley? or Hugo for that matter? :-)

Zombs: My mom's side is Irish if you go back far enough (so maybe the Irish whiskey would work :-), but she is from the Bahamas. The thing about the Caribbean is that you can name your child anything, and it is okay: I have an uncle named Roosevelt, a cousin Portia, and my grandfather was Newton Connell. We also have Welsh, and French in our backgrounds.

As for Lincoln, we agreed his informal nickname would be Link. For Jamison, it would be Jago (Welsh for James)

Your last name is Goth!?!

I like Parker the best of the names mentioned. Lincoln would be my least favorite.

I also like Austen which seems harmonious with the other names you've chosen.

I kind of like the whole last-names-as-first-names thing that's going on. My nephew named his son Smith which I thought was weird at first but now I love it. Very masculine, very direct.

Be careful how the initials look & what they spell. My son's initials are M.A.N., lol.

Swami: I hate to say it (because it's so cliche), but I knew an Austen, and know that I could never name my child that based on my opinions of that guy.

But you can bet I'm careful with the initials - I mentioned our last name starts with G, which allows for too many 3-letter words to be formed.

For instance:
Parker Ignatius G.
Lincoln Otis G.
Jamison Ulysses G.
Ethan Grover G.
Truman Arthur G.

I could go on, but I won't :-)

How do you know that he's going to be a preppy?

:)

I love Jamison! I think it goes well with Madeleine. My second choice of your list is Parker.

HD: I'm thinking more well-balanced than preppy :-) You know, like a football star who is also lead in the school play and an all-out genius. Not that I'm putting pressure on my kids or anything :-)

I know all of the names are in the same "genre" if you will. There are some others that I know I'm forgetting (the master list is at home).

So how come nobody has offered up suggestions? (well, with the exception of Kim's "Percival")

I'm quite fond of Jamieson (or the other spellings too). My son is a James David. He was called Jamie growing up but goes by James now. I often call him Jame - my compromise to his James and my Jamie. I like Jago too!

My favorite unique male name is Kade. We have a friend with that name and while I'm currently not that thrilled with the person, I do still love the name.

I like Parker the best. I know two girls named Riley, so that would be my least favorite of the names you chose.

We never decided on a boy's name, so good thing we had two girls. Our favorite boy's name was Kyle, but my DW couldn't SAY Kyle. It always came out "Cal". She can say "pile", "dial", and "while", but Kyle? CAL

kim (weltek) said...

LOL at Cal. :-)

Personally, I have to say that I don't like surnames as first names. Add to that the fact that a lot of girls are being named things like Parker and Riley (especially Riley) and your list shrinks (to me). My favourite is probably Lincoln, and Jameson is in second place.

This link: http://www.bigbadbabynames.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36818

will take you to a list of 191 naming resources. Beware, though, because a lot of them have really bogus lists and say things like 'Nevaeh' means 'sparkly butterfly' (It's heaven backwards).

Try Behind the Name (www.behindthename.com) for reliable advice.

And lastly, our list from Philippe, though our taste is very different:

Philippe, Joseph, Pascal, Sebastien, Nicolas, Julien, Francis, Patrick, Laurent, Simon, Daniel, Xavier, Gabriel, Thomas, Guillaume.

Some, of course, would not work with your last name.

I'll add my two bits, since I have an Irish heritage as well.
My son's name is Brennan, which is kind of Irish - we actually saw the name in the credits of the movie Far and Away. The meanings are turning up different at different sites.. but once we found it meant smelly hair, or something similar. We like it though..

Coco,

Thanks for your input and the links. Very helpful.

I forgot a few other names that are in the running:

Bennett
Everett and
and of course, who could forget: Hawksley

I think it's safe to say that Riley and Hunter have dropped out of the race. I'll continue to monitor this entry for any more thoughts or ideas. You guys have been great, as usual.
:-)

And a special welcome to all those who are new to my humble abode. Glad you stopped by. Make yourself at home, and visit often :-)

I like Jamison the best. Everett is also a very nice name.

I like Riley, but for a girl.

I like Parker the best out of your list. And Truman probably second.

Unlike Coco, I love last names for first names. I still love the name Carson.

Hi Meemo! Just thought I'd come by and see what was going on in the land of babyheads.

Out of your list, Riley is probably my favorite, but I see it's been dropped. Hunter is way overdone here. The rest just don't spark any interest with me.

My additions...
Dominic (yes, I know, that's Coco's son)
Blaine
Trenton (Trent for short)
Tristan
Devin (or Devon), which is Rotten1's name
Ethan

Colin
Brody or Brady
Christian (unisex name, though)
